Scientific Heart Aches - Graison Ray

Please stop looking away.
Those few seconds in time when your eyes
drift, your hands cover the sneaking smile–
wiping it elsewhere as if I couldn’t still see
the red on your cheeks.
Mydriasis so you can take in more light
making you look high on the sparks.
Your eyes meet back with mine
and I can’t help but shiver in warmth.
In safety.

In just those four seconds
my nervous system explodes in productivity.
The physical reaction given by eyesight
can be catastrophic;
making me think of those four seconds
for days to come.

Walking away from this moment,
you will set the neurotransmitters free.
Those neuro-notes that make my heart race
to the beat of your glance.
Hands become clammy and tacky.
Stomach felt in zero gravity.

Your look sends a tsunami
of indescribable chemical reactions
through my bloodstream
till you come back.
In my eyesight again.
